- The Super Smash Bros. universe: The "default" universe, this represents the Smash Bros. games themselves and accompanies all appearances of characters and stages that are thematically original to the fighting games themselves. Many original characters have been introduced here, but none thus far have been actually playable, with most serving as enemies and bosses in single-player content. The universe symbol seen here is also used as a "placeholder" by the games to indicate a minor universe without its own symbol. It gets its own character representation by the Mii Fighter, but officially, they haven't been in any Smash game before their debut as playable in the Super Smash Bros. universe, not to mention that Miis have appeared in various other games, most notably the StreetPass Plaza games, including Find Mii.

- Special Stages: The series that represents Battlefield and Final Destination on Melee (although Final Destination uses the Smash Bros. symbol, it is labelled under Special Stages).

- Subspace: A sort of sub-universe of the greater Smash Bros. universe, Subspace encompasses Tabuu and his Subspace Army, as well as the realm of Subspace itself and other original content restricted to the Subspace Emissary.
- Primid is featured as a Mii Fighter costume. It also appears in Smash Dungeon along with Puppit, Roturret, Roader, Gamyga, and Auroros.

- World of Light: Another sort of sub-universe of the greater Smash Bros. universe, the World of Light encompasses Galeem, the Lord of Light commanding an army of Master Hands. Later, another threat appeared from the World of Dark: Dharkon, the Lord of Darkness commanding an army of Crazy Hands. Both Galeem and Dharkon control armies of Puppet fighters possessed by Spirits that the player must defeat.

- The Mario universe: Nintendo's flagship video game franchise. The company mascot at the head of this multi-genre series, Mario, is a primary playable character in Smash Bros. games, and has been accompanied by his brother, Luigi (both since Smash 64); his alter-ego, Dr. Mario (Melee, Smash 4 and Ultimate); the Mushroom Kingdom princess, Peach (since Melee), the villainous king of the Koopas, Bowser (since Melee) and his mischievous son Bowser Jr. (since Smash 4); the cosmic guardian, Rosalina, along with her child, Luma (since Smash 4); the Sarasaland Kingdom princess, Daisy (since Ultimate), the carnivorous Piranha Plant (since Ultimate), the King of Spinoffs Waluigi, the dinosaur, Yoshi (since Smash 64); the gorilla, Donkey Kong (since Smash 64), and his chimp nephew, Diddy Kong (since Brawl); and the bellicose anti-hero, Wario (since Brawl) are all characters from this franchise. In addition, King Boo who was lifted from Luigi's Mansion appears as a downloadable promotional fighter for those who register the game and unlock every character, and Geno was later added to the game as a downloadable fighter for the Second Smash Season. The Mario universe is so expansive that Yoshi and Wario have been given their own sub-universes, while Donkey Kong and Mario started off together and therefore are linked in that way.
- Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion, Dr. Mario, and Paper Mario’’ and, to an extent, the Mario-sports spin-offs are treated as partially separate universes with a collection of music tracks, though it still uses the main Mario series symbol.
- A Chain Chomp and Hanmer Bro with Pokey in Infinite appears in Assist Trophy
- Stages include Peach's Castle, Mushroom Kingdom (SSB), Princess Peach's Castle, Rainbow Cruise, Mushroom Kingdom (SSBM), Mushroom Kingdom ||, Delfino Plaza, Mushroomy Kingdom, Mario Circuit (SSBB), Luigi's Mansion, Mario Bros., 3D Land, Golden Plains, Paper Mario, Rainbow Road, Mushroom Kingdom U, Mario Galaxy, Mario Circuit (SSBWU), Super Mario Maker, and New Donk City Hall. Infinite includes Dr. Mario, Bowser’s Castle, Megafruit Paradise, Baseball Kingdom, and Waluigi’s Pinball. Mario Bros. includes new hazards including Icicles and Fighter Flies. Mario Maker includes contains a night version plus new elements. Luigi's Mansion includes a new element where the Hotel appears once the Mansion is broken with new ghastly cameos appearing. New Donk City features cameos including Chinhos, Uproots, and Magmatoes.
- Items include Bob-ombs, Fire Flower, Green Shell, Red Shell, Super Star, Freezie, Metal Box, Poison Mushroom, Super Mushroom, Banana Peel, Golden Hammer, Hothead, Lightning Bolt, Soccer Ball, Boomerang, Bullet Bill, Fire Bar, Grass, POW Block, Spiny Shell, and Super Leaf. Infinite includes Double Cherry, Bonneter, Blooper, and Cape Feather.
- Pauline and Bowser appear as Mii Fighter Costumes in Infinite.
- Antasma, Blooper, Boo, Boom Boom and Pom, Bullet Bill, Cappy, Chain Chomp, Chargin' Chuck, Dry Bowser, Kammy Koopa, King Bob-omb, Lakitu & Spiny, Mouser, Nabbit, Paper Bowser, Piantas, Polterpup, Rabbid Peach, Shadow Queen, Shy Guy, Tatanga, Waluigi, Wart, and Wiggler all appear as Spirits in Ultimate. Infinite included more Spirits such as Giga Cat Mario, Golden Dash Mushroom, Fury Bowser, and Sea Pipe Statue.
- Koopa Troopa, Koopa Paratroopa, Boos, Viruses, Goombas, abd Big goombas appear in Smash Dungeon as an enemy.

- The Wrecking Crew universe: A curious NES puzzle/platform game starring Mario and Luigi as demolition workers, trying to destroy old buildings while avoiding sentient wrenches, Foreman Spike and the infamous Eggplant Man. One of Mario's palette swaps resembled Foreman Spike and one of Luigi's palette swaps resembles his appearance in the game. In Melee, there is a trophy of Eggplant Man. Previously classified as a Mario game, the sub-series was given its own symbol and stage.

- The Donkey Kong universe: A franchise which the Mario series was partially spun-off from. The direction of British company Rareware (now known as Rare Ltd.), focusing on Donkey Kong and his many simian relatives and reptilian nemeses. Donkey Kong himself has been a playable Smash Bros. character throughout the entire series, while his monkey-like nephew Diddy Kong has been playable since Brawl. King K. Rool, the leader of the Kremlins and the main antagonist of the Donkey Kong Country series, was playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Super Smash Bros. Infinite, they are joined by Dixie Kong, the girlfriend of Diddy and co-protagonist of Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3.
- Assist trophies include Klaptrap and Cranky Kong who lends a rather unhelpful hand in Infinite.
- Stages include Congo Jungle, Kongo Jungle, Jungle Japes, Rumble Falls, 75m, and Jungle Hijinks. Infinite includes Sawmill Thrill from Tropical Freeze.
- Items include Hammer, Barrel Cannon, and Spring. Infinite included the Donkey Kong Country 64 item, Coconut Gun.
- Kritter and Kobbler appears as enemies in Smash Dungeon.
- Spirits include Cranky Kong, Dixie Kong (Along with Kiddy Kong), Kaptain K. Rool, Kalypso, Karate Kong, Klaptrap, Lanky Kong, Lord Frederik the Snowmad King, Ninja Kong, Rambi the Rhino, Rattly the Rattlesnake, Stanley, Winky the Frog, and Zinger. New Spirits added to Infinite are Wizpig, Brambles, and Sumo Kong.

- The Legend of Zelda universe: A series of adventure titles portraying several incarnations and continuities of its main characters, primarily the young Hylian hero Link (who is accompanied by Young Link in Melee and Ultimate and Toon Link since Brawl), the eponymous princess Zelda (since Melee), and the dark lord/warlock Ganondorf (since Melee). These, as well as Zelda's ninja-like alter-ego Sheik (since Melee), are playable characters. In Infinite, they are joined by two newcomers: the Koholint Island Songstress Marin and the Agent of the Goddess Impa, who serves as Sheik's Echo Fighter.
- Ghirahim, Tingle, Midna, Skull Kid, and the Moon with Bokoblin and Medli in Infinite appear as Assist Trophies.
- Koume and Kotake appear as stage hazards in Gerudo Valley. King Bulblin appears as stage hazards in Bridge of Eldin. Stages include Hyrule Castle, Great Bay, Temple, Bridge of Eldin, Pirate Ship, Gerudo Valley, Spirit Train, Skyloft, and Great Plateau Tower. Koholint Island appears as a stage in Infinite. Great Plateau Shiekah Tower gains a day/night cycle and the four Divine Beasts in the background.
- Items include Heart Container, Bunny Hood, Deku Nut, Beetle, Bombchu, Cucco, Fairy Bottle, and Gust Bellows. The Spinner appears an item in Infinite.
- Octorok and Lynel appear as an enemy in smash Dungeon.
- Tingle and Darknut appear as a Mii Fighter Costumes in Infinite.
- Spirits include Bokoblin, Calamity Ganon, Great Fairy, Guardian, Impa, Loftwing, Medli, Merman, Moon, Revali, Ruto, Skull Kid, The Imprisoned, Wind Fish, and Yuga.

- The Metroid universe: A science fiction series in either the side-scrolling platforming or the first-person adventure genres. The series' formerly silent protagonist, female bounty hunter Samus Aran clad in a versatile power suit (as well as without it in an alternative guise named Zero Suit Samus), is the primary playable character. In Brawl, another character from the universe appeared as a boss in the form of Ridley, and later as Meta Ridley. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Ridley appears as a stage boss in Pyrosphere. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ridley appeared as a playable character. Additionally, Dark Samus, the main antagonist who made her debut in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, appeared in 3DS/Wii U as an Assist Trophy and was playable as Samus' Echo Fighter in Ultimate.
- A Metroid appears as an Assist Trophy in every game. Mother Brain also appears as an Assist Trophy in 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate. It also appears an enemy in Smash Dungeon. E.M.M.I. appears as an Assist Trophy in Infinite.
- Stages include Planet Zebes, Brinstar, Brinstar Depths, Norfair, Frigate Orpheon, and Pyrosphere. Burenia appears as a stage in Infinite. Vorash replaces Ridley in Pyrosphere in Infinite.
- Screw Attack also appears as an Item.
- Sylux appears as a Mii Costume in Infinite.
- Zebsian Space Pirate and Chozo Warrior appears as enemies in Smash Dungeon.
- Spirits include Adam Malkovich, Galactic Federation Mech, Gunship, Meta Ridley, Metroid, Ridley Robot, Samus Aran (Military Dress), and Zebesian Space Pirate.

- The Yoshi universe: The Yoshi universe is based on the more colorful and saccharine subset of Mario video games starring the dinosaur Yoshi, who is the main (and thus far only) playable character of the series in the Smash Bros. games. Several properties seen in Smash Bros. games can be identified as strictly belonging to this universe instead of the Mario universe.
- Fly Guy appears as an enemy in Yoshi's Island (SSBM). Stages include Yoshi's Island (SSB), Yoshi's Island (SSBM), Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island (SSBB), and Woolly World. Support Ghost appears on Yoshi Island (SSBB) as a common ally while Sky Guys appear as common enemies on the same stage. Crafted World appears a stage in Infinite.
- Poochy appears as an Assist Trophy in Infinite.
- Toadies and Fuzzies appears as enemies in Smash Dungeon.
- Baby Mario, Stork, Yarn Poochy, and Yarn Yoshi all appear as Spirits.

- The Kirby universe: The game franchise headed by Masahiro Sakurai prior to and alongside his directorial involvement in his Smash Bros. series. The titular pink spherical hero Kirby (since Smash 64), his menacing rival Meta Knight (since Brawl), the greedy King Dedede (since Brawl), the ever-helpful frienemy Bandana Waddle Dee (since Infinite), and the galaxy’s strongest warrior Galacta Knight (since Infinite) have all been featured as playable characters.
- Knuckle Joe has appeared in every game as an Assist Trophy. Other Assist Trophies includes Nightmare and Chef Kawasaki. Adeleine & Ribbon appears as an Assist Trophy in Infinite.
- Marx is a boss in various modes like Classic Mode, Smash Dungeon, and Boss Spheres.
- Stages include Dream Land (SSB), Fountain of Dreams, Green Greens, Halberd, Dream Land (SSB3DS), and The Great Cave Offensive. Infinite included the stage Castle Dedede and Gigabyte Ruins, Fountain of Dreams includes cameos such as UFO, Morpho Knight, and Ripple Star. Green Greens includes new hzards such as Krackos and Gordos.
- Items include Maxim Tomato, Star Rod, Parasol, Warp Star, Dragoon, Superspicy Curry, and Bomber.
- Waddle Dee appears as an enemy in Smash Dungeon.
- Spirits include Bonkers, Daroach, Gooey, Gordo, Knuckle Joe, Magolor, Poppy Bro Jr., Prince Fluff, Kirby & Robobot Armor, Rocky, Susie, Waddle Dee, Waddle Doo, and Whipsy Woods.

- The Star Fox universe: A series of sci-fi shooting games that got its start as among the first games to popularize 3D polygonal graphics in the Super Nintendo era. All the games' characters are anthropomorphic animals. The de facto leader of the "Star Fox" team Fox McCloud has been available for the entire series. Ace wing man Falco Lombardi was added to the list in Melee and has been in every game since. Wolf O'Donnell, Fox's rival and leader of the mercenary group "Star Wolf", has been playable in Brawl and Ultimate.
- Andross appears in every game as an Assist Trophy while Krystal appeared in Ultimate as an Assist Trophy.
- Stages include Sector Z, Corneria, Venom and Lylat Cruise. The Smart Bomb appears as an Item.
- Hi-Ho appears as an enemy in Smash Dungeon.
- Spirits include James McCloud, Slippy Toad, General Pepper, Andross, Leon Powalski, Pigma Dengar, Andrew Okionny.

- The Pokémon universe: One of video gaming's most lucrative franchises, this multi-genre franchise emphasizes handheld role-playing games that focus on the training and battling of 808 distinctive species of creatures called Pokémon, from which the series derives its name. Playable characters consist of electric mouse mascot Pikachu (since Smash 64) and its younger form Pichu (Melee and Ultimate), the hypnotic pink puffball Jigglypuff (since Smash 64), psychic feline humanoid Mewtwo (Melee, Smash 4 and Ultimate), the jackal-like Lucario (since Brawl), a generic Pokémon Trainer (Brawl and Utimate) who commands his three Pokémon (Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard, although Charizard reappears by itself in Smash 4) from the background to do battle in the foreground, the speedy ninja frog Greninja (since Smash 4), the flaming tiger wrestler Incineroar (since Ultimate) and the intrepid duo from the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series Grovyle & Celebi (since Infinite).
- Rayquaza appears as a boss in Classic Mode, Smash Dungeon, and Boss Spheres.
- Stages include Saffron City, Pokemon Stadium, Poke Floats, Pokemon Stadium 2, Spear Pillar, Kalos Pokemon League, Prism Tower, and Unova Pokemon League. Wigglytuff Guild and Galar Wild Area appears as stages in Infinite. Pokemon Stadium 2 and Saffron City adds new cameos.

- Infinite includes Poke Ball Pokemon such as Gengar, Hitmontop, Sirfetch’d, Wooloo, and more.

- Beedrill, Tyranitar, Zubat, Falinks, Noivern, and Gulpin appear in Smash Dungeon as enemies.

- The EarthBound universe: Also referred to by its Japanese title, the Mother series. A postmodern, satirical, and psychedelic take on role-playing conceived by Shigesato Itoi, with three games in the series. The protagonists of the second and third games, EarthBound's Ness (since Smash 64) and Mother 3's Lucas (since Brawl) respectively, have been playable as characters.
- Jeff Andonuts and Starmanhas appears as every game as an Assist Trophy. Stages include Onett Town, Fourside, and New Pork City.
- Ness and Kumatora appear as Mii Fighter Costumes.
- Negative Man appear as a Smash Dungeon enemy.

- The F-Zero universe: A futuristic racing game series featuring anti-gravity racing machines that zoom at extremely fast and intense speeds, with game play emphasizing speed boosts, cornering, and physically ramming each other's machines to lower life meters. The superhero-like bounty hunter Captain Falcon serves as the most recognizable racer and "mascot" of the series and is the only playable character throughout the Smash Bros. series.
- Samurai Goroh appears in every game as an Assist Trophy. Stages include Big Blue, Port Town Aero Dive, and Mute City (SSB3DS).

- The Ice Climber universe: A classic NES game focusing on a pair of parka-clad, mallet-wielding children named Popo and Nana as they infinitely scale platformed mountains to retrieve vegetables from a Condor. The Ice Climbers function together as one playable character.

- The Summit returns as a stage for the series.

- The Fire Emblem universe: A long-running series of tactical role-playing games set in sword-and-sorcery medieval fantasy settings and portrayed with numerous anime character designs. Formerly a series released only in Japan, it gained enough popularity in its appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee that the franchise began to be released internationally from then on, and has proven quite popular as such. Main heroes from the various unrelated instalments in the series, including Marth (since Melee), Roy (Melee and Smash 4), and Ike (since Brawl) have been featured as playable characters. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Lucina, Robin and Corrin were also added as representatives of this universe. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Lucina returns as Marth's Echo Fighter. Additionally, Chrom, who was part of Robin's Final Smash in 3DS/Wii U, is now playable as Roy's Echo Fighter. Furthermore, Byleth was playable in Ultimate as a downloadable fighter.
- Lyn appears in every game as an Assist Trophy, while Black Knight and Tiki appear in Ultimate as the Assist Trophies. Infinite includes Sateth as an Assist Trophy
- Stages from the series includes Castle Siege, Colosseum, Arena Ferox, and Garreg Mach Monastary. Items include the Killing Edge as well as the Armorslayer and Breidablik in Infinite.
- The Breidablik can summon various Fire Emblem characters like Ashnard, Ryoma, Lilith, Legault, and many more to perform a single attack.
- The Gatekeeper and male and female versions of Robin appear as Mii Fighter Costumes in Infinite.
- Risen appear as a Smash Dungeon enemy.

- The Game & Watch universe: The Smash Bros. games' representation of one of Nintendo's earliest digital products, which is a series of LCD handheld consoles named "Game & Watch". A previously unnamed black-and-white character in several of these games has been featured as a playable character under the name Mr. Game and Watch since Melee.

- The Kid Icarus universe: An old classic NES game released alongside the original Metroid. It is the story of a young angel knight named Pit as he battles to save the goddess Palutena from the forces of the evil Medusa, which was revived by Masahiro Sakurai. Pit appears with a major graphical redesign as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Palutena makes her debut as a playable character in Smash 4. Dark Pit, a major character in Kid Icarus: Uprising, also debuts as a playable character in Smash 4 and an echo fighter in Ultimate. Medusa entered the fray as Palutena’s echo fighter in Infinite.
- Phosphora appears as an Assist Trophy along with Eggplant Wizard in Infinite.
- Monoeye appears as a Smash Dungeon enemy

- The Wario universe: Referred to in NTSC versions of Brawl as the WarioWare universe, and as the WarioWare, Inc. series by PAL versions, the Wario universe is a sub-series of Mario games whose main character is Mario's ill-mannered and nefarious anti-hero counterpart, Wario. The games in this series are either platforming titles or (more prominently) micro-game collections, and Wario as he appears in both of these two genres of games within his series is the one playable character. Ashley took the step up from Assist Trophy to playable character in Infinite.
- Kat & Ana and Mona appear together as Assist Trophies. Stages include WarioWare, Inc., and Gamer.
- Captain Syrup appears as a Mii Fighter Costumes in Infinite.
- Spirits include Count Cannoli, Jimmy T., Mona, Princess Shokora, Pyoro, and Shake King.

- The Metal Gear universe: A third-party franchise. A series of stealth and espionage shooting games set on a fictional take of real-world Earth in somewhat apocalyptic time periods in the future where nuclear deterrence and various moral issues are dealt with as social commentary by the games themselves. The series' main star, Solid Snake, is a playable character in Brawl and Ultimate.
- Frank Jaeger, the Gray Fox, appears in Brawl as an unlockable Assist Trophy and Ultimate as a starter Assist Trophy. The stage Shadow Moses Island returned with Snake. The cybernetic version of Raiden appears as a Mii Costume in Infinite.

- The Sonic the Hedgehog universe: A third-party franchise, one of SEGA's primary franchises, and a longtime rival franchise to Nintendo's Mario in the years before SEGA became a software developer for Nintendo and other companies. This world with anthropomorphic characters is the setting of many games covering multiple genres. Its eponymous mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, is a playable character in Brawl, Smash 4, and Ultimate and was highly anticipated.
- Shadow the Hedgehog, a famous character from the series, appears as an Assist Trophy along with Knuckles. Buzz Bomber and Big the Cat appear as a Assist Trophies in Infinite.
- Tails, Silver the Hedgehog, and Knuckles the Echidna appeared in Brawl and 3DS as a stage cameo in the Green Hill Zone stage.
Green Hill Zone and Windy Hill Zone appears as stages. The boss Death Egg Robo appears as a boss is Classic Mode, Smash Dungeon, and Boss Spheres in Infinite. Also in this game, the Shield Monitor appears as an item.

- The Pikmin universe: A real-time strategy game series that started on the GameCube. The main character, Captain Olimar, and the titular creatures, the Pikmin. The five different Pikmin types, red, blue, yellow, purple, and white, along with Captain Olimar, are combined into a playable character known as Pikmin & Olimar. Alph, the protagonist of Pikmin 3, appears as a playable character since Smash 4 as one of Olimar's palette swaps.
- A Burrowing Snagret appears in as an Assist Trophy.
- Rock Bomb appears as an item in Infinite.
- Swooping Snitchbig appear as an enemy in Smash Dungeon.

- The R.O.B. universe: Also known as the Robot universe. Not much is known about this universe, other than the fact that its symbol is a Gyro from Gyromite.

- The Animal Crossing universe: This is a series of colourful life simulation games where the player's avatar lives in a woodland town featuring anthropomorphic animals as the town's residents and neighbours. The series gained more content in Brawl with stage, an item, an assist trophy, and many stickers and trophies that originated in this universe.
- In Smash 4, it became even more noteworthy, with a Villager added as a playable character, as well as Isabelle tagging along as an Assist Trophy. Isabelle returned in Ultimate, this time as a playable character, while Kapp'n appeared as an Assist Trophy.
- Beside Town & City and Tortimer’s Island, the stage Mystery Island appears in Infinite.
- Tarantula/Scorpion appear as an enemy in Smash Run.

- The Mega Man universe: Capcom's long-running series is another third-party universe with a playable character, the titular Mega Man. A franchise spanning at least five different series, the main concept for each one being the robotic protagonist fighting colourful enemies and taking their powers.
- Wily Castle appears as a stage which features the entity known as Yellow Devil. Zero and Wily Capsule appears as an assist trophy in Ultimate.
- Proto Man, Mega Man.EXE, Zero, and Servbot appear as Mii Fighter Costumes.
- Mettaur appears as an enemy in Smash Dungeon.

- The Wii Fit universe: Nintendo's recently successful Wii Fit series introduced Wii Fit Trainer as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The Wii Fit Studio, where Yoga and Strength Training are performed in Wii Fit. Infinite includes the Balance Board as an Assist Trophy.

- The Punch-Out!! universe: A series of boxing games, best known for the large cast of colourful (yet stereotypically depicted) characters. The main character of the NES and Wii games, Little Mac, appears in Brawl as an Assist Trophy and as a playable character in Smash 4 and Ultimate. It is also represented by a stage, Boxing Ring.

- The Pac-Man universe: A third party franchise, Bandai Namco's long running series about a yellow, spherical creature named Pac-Man, and his many adventures in "Pac-World". The eponymous character appears as a playable character in Smash 4 and Ultimate, accompanied by characters and elements from other Namco Arcade games. - The Street Fighter universe: Announced via a leak as the first ever DLC third-party franchise in Smash history via the introduction of the wandering World Warrior called Ryu and an updated version of his stage from Street Fighter, this long-running fighting game series tells the many tales of these combatants out to prove themselves as the greatest fighter on the planet. Ryu returns with his stage in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Ken Masters, Ryu's rival, appears in Ultimate as Ryu's Echo Fighter.

- The Final Fantasy universe: Another new third-party series joining Smash as DLC, Square-Enix's long-running RPG franchise tells the stories and legends surrounding a group of heroes who go out on an epic quest to stop supernatural evil forces from taking over their world. Cloud Strife, the main hero of the most popular entry of the franchise, Final Fantasy VII, was announced as a new DLC character along with his stage based on the city of Midgar from the same game.
- Odin, Leviathan, Ramuh, Ifrit, and Bahamut ZERO appear out of the Summon Materia in the Midgar stage.
- Sephiroth, the main villain of Final Fantasy VII, appeared in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC fighter, along with a new stage, Northern Cave. Tifa Lockhart appears as both an Assust Trophy and a Mii Costume. Garret and Aerith joins the Chocobo as Mii Costumes while the Phoenix Down is featured as an item.

- The Castlevania universe: Konami's long-running Action-Adventure series is the latest third-party series to join Smash Bros.. The main protagonist of the Castlevania series, Simon Belmont, as well as his Echo Fighter and the main protagonist of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, Richter Belmont, are the new playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Additionally, Alucard, the son of Dracula and the main protagonist of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, will join as an assist trophy and Dracula himself appears as a boss. Also, the main location of the Castlevania series, Dracula's Castle, is appeared as a stage. Included as an item is also the Reaper’s Scythe.

- The Persona universe: The first DLC third-party franchise of Ultimate. Persona is a sub-series of Shin Megami Tensei, Altus's long running series of turn based RPGs set in both modern day Japan and a demon world that's naturally unseen by everyone except for each games main cast of playable characters. Like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy, each mainline game in the Persona series have their own individual stories and characters with elements and recurring themes shared between them. The main character from Persona 5, known by the codename Joker, appeared as the first downloadable character for the Fighters Pass in Ultimate.
- Mementos appears as a stage in Ultimate, which featured cameos from the main cast of party characters in Persona 5. It is also the only stage to change its design based on the music that's chosen, changing colour when either a song from Persona 3 or Persona 4 is selected.

Dragon Quest is another one of Square Enix's long-running RPG series where it takes place in a fantasy world, with medieval technologies and trapping, though most games takes place in a world distinct from every other. Every game is told primarily through the eyes of a Hero named by a player, and the Hero joins forces with his party on a quest to save the world from evil. Luminary, the Hero from Dragon Quest XI, appeared as the second downloadable character for the Fighter Pass in Ultimate, along with the palette swap characters: Eight from Dragon Quest VIII, Solo from Dragon Quest IV, and Erdrick from Dragon Quest III.

- The ARMS universe: Arms, also stylized as ARMS, is a motion-control-based fighting game developed by Nintendo which released in 2017. Originally, due to the development cycle of Ultimate, characters from ARMS were only initially in the game as Mii Costumes and Spirits. The character that is considered to be the protagonist (though it is stated by the creator that all characters are the main character), Spring Man, was an Assist Trophy as was close as there was to an ARMS fighter in Ultimate until it was announced on 6/22/2020 that Min Min was the first downloadable character for Fighter Pass Vol. 2 in Ultimate.

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Mojang Studios and was initially released in multiple Alpha and Beta versions throughout 2009 and 2010, before officially launching in 2011, where players explore a blocky 3D-generated world to craft tools and items and build homes. The default male protagonist of the series, Steve, appeared as the second downloadable character for Fighter Pass Vol. 2 in Ultimate, along with the palette swap characters: the default female protagonist Alex, the generic enemy Zombie, and a neutral mob Enderman.

Though initially only represented with a Mii Costume for Heihachi Mishima, the franchise would gain a boost in content, as hero-turned-villain of the series Kazuya Mishima, appeared as the fifth downloadable character for Fighter Pass Vol. 2 in Ultimate. During the First Smash Season, Jin Kazama would be added to the game as part of an Echo Pack, being an Echo Fighter of his father Kazuya.
